Weekend 2 — Hinckley

For the first time in many years the whole 4NCL clan got together and it was a fair old craic as they say back in Dublin. The main action was around the 1st team’s attempts for promotion and the action proved tighter and more dramatic then expected.

Round 3

PANDORA'S BOX GRANTHAM 4 - 4 OXFORD 1
1 w Ashton, Adam G 2325 ½ - ½ Savage, Ben 2308
2 b Burrows, Martin P 2196 0 - 1 Rose, Matt 2249
3 w Cumbers, Paul 2165 1 - 0 Shaw, Dave 2250
4 b Bentley, John L 2227 1 - 0 White, Mike 2242
5 w McCarthy, Kevin 2070 ½ - ½ Rawlinson, Aidan 2243
6 b Birtwhistle, Nigel 2106 1 - 0 Eckersley-Waites, Tom 2222
7 w Coates, David 2012 0 - 1 Smallbone, Kieran 2235
8 b Milson, Samuel 1955 0 - 1 Tidman, Sophie 2095

Rose,M (2249) - Burrows,M (2196) [B22]
4NCL/Div2a/PANDG vs. OXF1 Hinckley Island ENG (3.2), 06.12.2008

1.e4 c5 2.c3 d5 3.exd5 Qxd5 4.d4 e6 5.Nf3 Nf6 6.Be3 cxd4 7.cxd4 Nc6 8.Nc3 Qd6 9.Bd3 Be7 10.0-0 0-0 11.a3 b6 12.Qe2 Bb7 13.Rad1 Rad8 14.Rfe1 Rfe8 15.Bb1 Qb8 16.Bg5 Nd5 17.Qe4 g6 18.Qh4 Rd7 19.Nxd5 Rxd5 20.Ba2 Rd7?

Matt has activated his pieces and weakened the black k-side pawn structure now he makes a typical strike

21.Rxe6! The rest is easy. 21... Bxg5 22.Rxe8+ Qxe8 23.Nxg5 h5 24.Ne4 Kf8 25.Nf6 Qd8 26.Nxd7+ Qxd7 27.Qf6 Nd8 28.Re1 Bd5 29.Qh8# 1-0

Sophie also played a nice game helped by the suicidal last move 11…h5??

12.Nxf7! Nxf7 13.Bxg6 0-0-0 14.Bxf7 Be7 15.Bxh5 Rf8

Black is clearly lost but I liked the way Sophie wrapped it up in a cool and unhurried manner. By the way most of her moves are Fritz 1st picks

16.Qd1 Be8 17.Be2 Qb6 18.h5 Nh6 19.g4 Qd8 20.Be3 Bg5 21.Qd2 Rfg8 22.Bxg5 Rxg5 23.f3 Rg7 24.dxc5 Qe7 25.Qd4 Nf7 26.Nd2 Qc7 27.f4 Nh6 28.g5 Nf5 29.Qf2 Rgh7 30.h6 Bg6 31.0-0-0 Qc6 32.Nf3 Qa4 33.Ne1 Rc7 34.Bd3 Qc6 35.Nf3 Qa4 36.Nd4 Nxd4 37.Qxd4 Qe8 38.Bxg6 Qxg6 39.Qd3 Qf7 40.Rdf1 Qf8 41.f5 Qg8 42.g6 1-0

A nervous moment when Top Cat (aka Fuzzball, Kieran) did not play the completely winning 23…Nxf4 but made up for it by winning in 10 more moves.

The match ended in a draw.

OXFORD 2 5 - 1 CELTIC TIGERS 2
1 w Dickinson, Tim 2158 1 - 0 Fathallah, Joe 1976
2 b Starkie, Ray 2125 ½ - ½ O'Grady, Gary 1932
3 w Bruce, Dave 2078 ½ - ½ Kitchen, Peter J 1895
4 b Stembridge, Ed 2058 1 - 0 Larter, Nick 1819
5 w Rawlinson, Chris 2047 1 - 0 Kitchen, Peter J 1895
6 b Jeffries, Majid 2019 1 - 0 Bannon, Senan 1475

Meanwhile for the 2nds, Ed played a nice game

And I should have had a nice technical win but underplayed my hand and only managed to draw. We won the match 5-1 though at one stage it was looking close. So my sad excuse that I wasn’t really trying and holding a draw in hand did not really wash with the troops. But in truth I had had a busy time of it lately.

LITTLETHORPE 3 2 - 4 OXFORD 3
1 w Mapletoft, Alexander J 1925 0 - 1 Duggan, Chris 2044
2 b Turvey, Steven 1915 ½ - ½ Hadi, Justin 2015
3 w Farrall, David J 1818 0 - 1 Ludbrook, Matt 2015
4 b van der Westhuizen, Charles 1795 1 - 0 Levicki, Jeffrey 1940
5 w Venmore-Rowland, Edward 1840 0 - 1 Terry, Sean 1848
6 b Harrison, Peter K 1669 ½ - ½ Henbest, Kev 1795

The 3rds also won 4-2. The pick of the games was Matt’s who finally found some 4NCL form. A typical nervy middlegame ends in an abrupt finish when white cracks

Matt also organised the evening out in a local seafood restaurant which was enjoyed by all. A quick word about the photos. There was no music – maybe another time – so I slipped one in of a recent gig. The shameless photo of Konnie was by courtesy of Sean. I can’t think why he sent me this. I remember mentioning to Sean way back that my kids told me there were websites devoted to Konnie. I have never been on them myself but I stuck it in as it allowed me a gag or two. I’ll have you all know I thought it was sad of her to let it all hang out like that. Personally I prefer these things in proportion and to be honest I have found that a modest hint of cleavage can be far more sexy and seductive. But that’s enough of my tastes for now.

Round 4

OXFORD 1 4 - 4 JUTES OF KENT
1 w Savage, Ben 2308 0 - 1 Williams, Simon K 2494
2 b White, Mike 2242 1 - 0 Cooley, Chris 2273

7 w Tidman, Sophie 2095 ½ - ½ Donovan, Nigel 2093
8 b Dickinson, Tim 2158 0 - 1 Wilson, Alexandra 2026

On to Sunday and another tight match for the firsts. Their cause probably wasn’t helped when Tim defences came crashing down.

Wilson,A (2026) - Dickinson,T (2158) [B12]

22…Ne7?? 23.Rxg7! 1-0

Sophie played another nice game and fully deserved to win but her opponent hung on in there and the position became oversimplified and with a rooks pawn and the wrong squared bishop.

Tom had no such problems

Eckersley-Waites,T (2222) - Naylor,J (2191) [E97]
4NCL/Div2a/OXF1 vs. JUTK Hinckley Island ENG (4.3), 07.12.2008

20…Bxb7 21.cxb7 Qb8 22.Qb3 1-0

And Mike had a lot of cheek.

Cooley-White, round 4
39...g3!?!? 0-1 (time)

Another 4-4 draw.

WARWICKSHIRE SELECT 2 5 - 1 OXFORD 2
1 w Galloway, Iain 2139 1 - 0 Chapman, Graham 2080

5 w Stepanyan, Henrik 1975 1 - 0 Rawlinson, Chris 2047
6 b Stepanyan, Astghik 1775 ½ - ½ Hadi, Justin 2015

The 2nds had their normal Sunday going down 5-1. I escaped with an interesting draw when I strayed with my queen.

4NCL/Div3/WWKS2 vs. OXF2 Hinckley Island ENG (4.2), 07.12.2008

OXFORD 3 2½ - 3½ GUILDFORD-A&DC 5
1 w Duggan, Chris 2044 ½ - ½ Eckloff, Colin 2010
2 b Jeffries, Majid 2019 ½ - ½ Deswarte, Ian 1950
3 w Levicki, Jeffrey 1940 1 - 0 Gibbs, Daniel 1925
4 b Terry, Sean 1848 ½ - ½ Higgs, Anthony 1995
5 w Henbest, Kev 1795 0 - 1 Quinn, Joseph 1846
6 b Foster, Chantelle 1600 0 - 1 Shaw, Matthew 1925

The 3rds lost narrowly. Jeffrey, as always, played an enterprising game and deserved his win, eventually outplaying his opponent in the endgame.

That about wraps it up for now.
